I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. My name is Tym McDowell and I have served as your superintendent of schools since March 4, 2019. Prior to coming to Cromwell I served as a superintendent of schools for more than 30 years. My life in education began as a music teacher, then district supervisor, then high school assistant principal and then middle school principal. Finally, before my first superintendency I served as an assistant superintendent. Along the way I got my Master’s and 6th Year Degrees, followed by a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. After receiving my Doctorate I completed post-doctoral study at Harvard Graduate School of Education.
I served as a superintendent of schools in Orleans, Vermont, Plymouth, Connecticut and Westfield, Massachusetts. After I retired I served as interim superintendent in Wethersfield, CT, Watertown, CT, and Tolland, CT. Prior to coming to Cromwell I served as the Head of School for Pope Francis High School in Springfield, MA.
I have been married to the same wonderful girl for 50 years. We have two (2) sons and three (3) wonderful grandchildren.
I will be here until a new, permanent superintendent of schools is selected and is on-board. In Cromwell I’m very fortunate to be surrounded by many incredible people. The administrators, teachers, and staff are very dedicated. The Board of Education has been outstanding in their support. Chief Lamontagne and the Cromwell Police Department as well as Tony Salvatore, Town Manager, and Mayor Faienza have been welcoming and supportive as well.
I visit each school at least once per week and have found the buildings to be clean and well-maintained. I love seeing our students actively engaged in the learning process. It is, without question, the best part of my job!
The Superintendent Search
The Board has selected Dr. Joseph Erardi as the search consultant for the new superintendent. Dr. Erardi has scheduled two (2) dates to meet with members of the public to glean input regarding the search, process and attributes/characteristics desired in the new superintendent. The dates for the Focus Groups are Wednesday, April 24, 2019 and Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 7:00PM at the Cromwell High School Library. A survey will be available on our website www.cromwell.k12.ct.us. If you have not as yet, please take the survey.
Graduation and the Last Day of School
The last day of school will be Thursday, June 13, 2019. Cromwell High School will hold our graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 13th at 6:30PM. The ceremony will be held outside – weather permitting and inside if the weather doesn’t cooperate. I’m hoping for a gorgeous and sunny day!
Project Safe Graduation
Project Safe Graduation is simply a great event, ensuring that our graduates get to celebrate and enjoy their incredible achievement in a safe environment. The committee is looking for volunteers to help. They are also looking for donations. Please contact Julia Karstetter at 860-632-4841 or email@example.com if you are interested in volunteering or donating for this celebratory event.
I’m really enjoying my time in Cromwell. The people of Cromwell have much to be proud of – in their schools and their Town.
Thomas Y. McDowell, Ed. D.
